Pulse Oximeters

A pulse oximeter is a small battery powered device that measures the oxygen saturation (SpO2) in the blood. The procedure is a non-invasive technique so is completely painless. Simply place your finger into the oximeter and switch it on. The measurement is taken by shining two wavelengths of light at the fingertip and measuring how much is adsorbed by the oxygen in the blood. After a few seconds a figure known as the sats reading is given. This figure tells you how much oxygen your blood is carrying as a percentage of the maximum it could carry and also displays your pulse rate. Please note that nail varnish can cause false low readings but the oximeter is not affected by anaemia, jaundice or dark skin.
